Usenet Network

Usenet is a decentralized network, it works by each Usenet server sharing its information with all the other servers on the network. This propagation across servers makes Usenet an ideal place for storing information and data of all types. If a server is damaged (Message-IDs missing), the article can still exists on every other server in the network.

Altopia review

Newsgroup Servers Features & Specifications: Corporate offices: based in US | Tier-1 Provider: Yes | Backbone: Altopia | Servers: Server farms in the US | Price: $18/month| Retention: 15 days for Multi-part binaries larger than 15 parts Newsgroups: 122.000 | Maximum connections: 20 | Maximum download speed: 1 GB/s | SSL: Yes | Free trial: No | Newsreader: No | VPN: No | Download amounts: Not capped | Logs: No | Shared account: No | Header: No

Altopia is something of a UFO when it comes to the Usenet Providers’ market. Signing up to Altopia is similar to stepping back in time, to Usenet as it was at the end of the 20th century: an era when lots of small and independent Usenet Service Providers offered a basic service with weak retention (like Octanews), a simple webpage, and limited payment methods (CB) and packages based on the number of connections.

In the first years of the new millennium many of these Usenet Service Providers were bought up, or closed down because they did not develop with the times.

Altopia resisted and even boasts a solid base of loyal users who are interested in their Text hierarchies and Multipart binaries from between 2 and 15 parts (mostly jpegs).

From a technological point of view, Altopia is far behind is competitor: only 15 days retention on Multi-part binaries with more than 15 parts, completion (apart from DMCA files) which doesn’t reach 99% and only one server in the USA. You can only pay with credit card. (N.B. The account is not set up instantly, it takes a few hours.) But SSL is included for free!

But Altopia has a certain charm as an “outsider.” The speed of our package of 5 connections ($9.00/month) was not always stable. However for our usage the 10 days retention were easily enough, and matched Altopia’s promises.

Altopia has the privilege of being the last of the “small” Usenet Service Provider (USP) in America, not very well-known, almost a secret.
