Usenet Network

Usenet is a decentralized network, it works by each Usenet server sharing its information with all the other servers on the network. This propagation across servers makes Usenet an ideal place for storing information and data of all types. If a server is damaged (Message-IDs missing), the article can still exists on every other server in the network.

Best Free Usenet Servers

Free Usenet servers luckily do exist for those who want a very occasional usage because they are unreliable and unrepresentative of the wider network. The Usenet network is stable, secure, complete (binary and text) and fast.

Want to try out Usenet for free?

There are a small amount of Usenet servers that offer free access to newsgroups. Some are servers still in beta testing, others offer limited free access to promote their paying service. But these servers are not up to the standard of the premium ones: They have reduced or capped speed - Unsupported groups - Lower retention - Unstable access - No SSl

If you want reliable newsgroups with guaranteed connectivity, good retention, SSL, multi-gigabit server farms, you should check out one of these commercial usenet providers:

  1. EWEKA is our favorite Dutch Usenet provider. They offer fast, secure, reliable, ulimited Usenet access at an affordable price.

  2. USENETBUCKET is a Dutch Usenet provider that is offering cheap rates without sacrificing quality. It features unlimited traffic, SSL support and more starting at €2.95 per month.

  3. TWEAKNEWS offers unlimited Usenet + VPN from just 9,99 € a month.

Free Usenet Beta Access

reader.5eurousenet.com - Beta Usenet Access

5euroUsenet is a part of SnelNL (reader.5eurousenet.com = test.snelnl.com). What backbone them use? Based on retention they are likely a UNS Holdings reseller. The main site is behind Cloudflare but reader.5eurousenet.com comes back as LeaseWeb Netherlands B.V. so that means they are hiding behind a hosting company.

Looking for Euro-based Usenet provider

Eweka - Best European Usenet provider (EU Based servers, not subject to US DMCA laws) - Eweka is the most used, popular European Usenet Provider. You can enjoy unlimited Usenet access with free SSL and speeds up to 300 Mbit from just €7,50 a month - and double the retention rate of pretty much any other Dutch provider. But most importantly they accept PayPal and Ideal for payment (very few European providers accept Paypal).

Host: reader.5eurousenet.com

Port: 80 (SSL), 119, 443 (SSL), 563 (SSL)

Connections: 20

SSL: YES

Retention: 1500 days of retention

Bandwidth limit: NO

Account Sharing: NO

Setting up in Spotnet: How to setup in Spotnet

Spotweb is a Dutch system. Different programmes exist like Spotlite, Sponet 2.0 or web-based versions.

My favourite programme from Spotweb is Spotnet 2.0. The interface is great, translated into English, and you can search for films by category or thanks to a search engine. Users post a Spot including a SPOT file to download, an explanatory image and a description of the file.

Spotnet 2.0 uses NZBGet as a Newsreader for downloading, repairing and decompressing.

5euroUsenet review:

5euroUsenet give a free account that allows access to all the newsgroups, with just a couple of restriction:

  1. 5euroUsenet offers only a 7-day free beta test that doesn't require you to offer any payment

  2. The trial accounts are actually capped. Despite the claims of supporting 50MB/s speeds, I am not getting consistently good speeds.

Paid service: For just a bit more money there are many more reputable options out there like Eweka - Eweka is available at the same price and has more features:

  1. Eweka offers 3,200+ days of binary retention. Eweka offers several hundred days more retention than 5euroUsenet

  2. Eweka allows shared accounts. Shared accounts allow you to use the same subscription on multiple IPs (Pre-Paid Standard Account 50 Mbps - 8 Connections - €7,50)

  3. Eweka has 10 payment methods including Paypal – an extra advantage since Dutch servers often do not use Paypal.

Free Usenet Newsgroup Access

test.xennanews.com - Best Free Usenet provider

test.xennanews.com is part of Xennanews (Xennanews is a sister company of XSNews )

Xennanews corporate offices are based in Germany

test.xennanews.com servers (Xennanews network) are located in Holland

Looking for a Cheaper Usenet provider?

UsenetBucket (Dutch Usenet provider with Newsgroup servers located in Holland ) has Premium account as low as 2.95 €/Monthly - Usenetbucket is on the BaseIP network

Host: test.xennanews.com

test.xennanews.com is still free, but requires a registration. Every now and then Xennanews gives away a hundred or so accounts. The first to subscribe are the lucky winners. As soon as we hear of a giveaway we publish it on our homepage and on twitter.

Port: 119 (SSL:563)

Connections: 10

Speed: 10 Mbit

SSL: YES

Retention: Up to 60 days of retention. The general consensus seems to be 40 days

Bandwidth limit: NO

Account Sharing: NO

test.xennanews.com Review

An account with them is a real advantage. It is the best free Usenet server and everyone wants an account. For a free Usenet, it works really well, with the speed sometimes uneven or reduced but never to the point of being annoying. Retention is satisfactory and using the Xennanews server. test.xennanews.com could eventually complete any missing files.

XSUSENET - Free binary Usenet servers

Corporate offices are based in Sweden - Servers are located in Holland (XSUsenet is a XSNews reseller)

XSUsenet uses only the XSNews newsgroups servers in Holland.

Looking for European Usenet Tier-1 Provider?

We always recommend European Tier 1 usenet service provider. Tweaknews is one of our favorite Dutch Usenet providers

Host: free.xsusenet.com

User: Enter the login information you received

Pass: Enter the login information you received

Port: 119

Connections: 5 Connections Maximum

Speed: 2 Mbit

SSL: NO

Retention: 1100 days

Posting: NO

Account Sharing: NO

XSUsenet Review

XSUsenet is mainly known for its free Usenet access which is very popular. XSUsenet is a Usenet reseller. The servers (server farms in the Netherlands) used are from the major Usenet backbone XSNews, based in the Netherlands.

They have one basic plan: they are offering a plan including unlimited Usenet downloads, 50 connections, 1,100+ days of binary retention and free 256-bit SSL for $11.95 a month or $120 a year.

Compared to Tweaknews, XSUsenet is more expensive, has less retention and No VPN. For a cheaper offer and more retention, with servers based in Holland we recommend Tweaknews. XSUsenet is generally more expensive than its competition. It is obvious that this free offer uses a lot of human, costs money and technological resources.

What are the advantages of using European Tier-1 Provider Tweaknews?

  1. They offer reliable newsfeeds for cheap. We highly recommend the 9,99 €/month or 89,99 €/year specials, which is a lifetime discounts

  2. Tweaknews is a tier 1 provider meaning they are independent

  3. Tweaknews hosts server farms in the Netherlands. Tweaknews does not enforce DMCA they follow NTD Gedragscode guidelines.

  4. Free VPN - You can enjoy free VPN access
    • The main function of Tweaknews VPN is to encrypt everything that comes out of your device and into the internet.

Another feature is protecting your privacy online: A VPN allows you to hide your IP address by connecting to the servers of the VPN service provider. Using a VPN like Tweaknews VPN to access the internet ensures privacy of your web browsing. Using Tweaknews VPN also prevents ISPs, spammers and scammers from tracking your web activities.

Our favorite feature (besides their 'Zero Logs' policy) is that Tweaknews VPN lets you download via torrents if necessary. Tweaknews VPN is BitTorrent-friendly, so you can download as many torrents as you like (We recommend the Dutch server!). It is a real advantage to have a VPN since it allows users to have Usenet as a primary source for files, but to make use of another network if necessary.

  5. You may want to switch to a Top Tier 1 Usenet provider, because they tend to have faster speed than Usenet resellers

  6. As far as retention goes, it is currently 2500 days which means more than six years of posts to the Usenet.
