NZB File Guide

What is an NZB file?

NZB is an XML-based file format. It is used to retrieve posts from Usenet servers. The easiest way to think about nzb files is with this analogy: .torrent files are to BitTorrent as .nzb files are to Usenet. NZB files contain no actual files, only information about where and from whom to download the files. An NZB is a list of files that Usenet software (Newsreader) can use for downloading.

Newsbin, the former Usenet indexing site, eventually created the NZB file format to make finding binaries on Usenet easier. Indexers could scan Usenet newsgroups and find all the parts to a binary and create an NZB file that would tell an NZB downloader (ie NZBGet or sabNZBd) the msg IDs of the Usenet posts for all the parts. Generally the NZB files are either created by the individual indexer or they get the NZB files from other indexers.

Why do I need an NZB Site?

Using NZBs definitely makes using Usenet easier and faster:

NZB files make accessing files on Usenet extremely easy: NZB files have revolutionized Usenet by facilitating downloads, allowing Newsreaders to download directly without updating all headers in a Newsgroup. It automates the process of downloading, no longer do you need to find and select each file manually. Many Newsgroups have loads of files and it takes a long time to search through them with a traditional newsreader program.

Many files posted to Usenet nowadays have obfuscated file names, the filenames just look like scrambled letters and numbers. And sometimes uploaders spread the parts across numerous newsgroups. These obfuscated files can only be accessed via the use of a NZB. It has all of the information for each segment of what you are going to download. This includes the newsgroup it was posted to, the subject, who posted it, the date, and the size of all of the parts.

NZB files are the key to getting the most out Usenet

How to use NZB files?

Downloading files from Usenet is easy. Once you have the nzb file that you want, open it in your newsreader. Your newsreader will then located the file ID and start to download them. The most popular Newsreader currently out there is Newshosting's Newsreader. It has a massive user base and is stable, fast, free, works well with obfuscated files.

Newshosting Newsreader is incorporated with all Newshosting plans.

Once your Newshosting account is configured and you have Newshosting's newsreader installed, you can give the NZB file you have to NH Newsreader and it will download everything automatically, and even decompress and repair it when needed.

TIPS:

  1. Newshosting is our favorite Usenet provider, they offer 256-bit SSL encryption, a built-in newsreader, the longest file retention of any Usenet provider, great download completion and lightning download speeds. But no matter which Usenet provider you choose, you get access to the same files.

  2. You can use any newsreader you want to connect to Usenet. Other good newsreaders include SABnzbd and NZBGet

How To Find Them?

The next and last step is finding NZB Files. There is two ways to find NZB files:

Usenet Indexers: There are an enormous amount of NZB sites, they let you search Usenet's content.

Hand indexers: These communities classify and index everything by category (theme) and create links between the posted name and exact content of the file. It allows users to quickly and easily find anything posted on Usenet.

Raw and newznab based indexers: These NZB Sites index automatically by robot programs on servers (Newznab - nZEDb).
