Usenet Network

Usenet is a decentralized network, it works by each Usenet server sharing its information with all the other servers on the network. This propagation across servers makes Usenet an ideal place for storing information and data of all types. If a server is damaged (Message-IDs missing), the article can still exists on every other server in the network.

Best NZB Sites - Usenet Search Engines 2017

There are many sites that index Usenet.

  1. Nzb Search Engine: these are classic search engines that index and give you results by key words. No human influence. Just an algorithm to search.

  2. Newznab-based indexer: These sites use Newznab scripts to index the usenet network. These sites are easily integrated with third party programmes like Couchpota.to

  3. nZEDb: These sites uses nZEDb. nZEDb is a fork of newznab plus. The API is compatible with sabnzbd, nzbdrone, sickbeard, couchpotato and similar software.

  4. NZB indexing service: unlike the previous, these sites work through a community that classify content by type and category.

  5. Spotweb-based website: Spotweb is an indexer based on the Spotnet protocol.

Free NZB Search Engine

The first method is to search for key words using an NZB search engine. Usenet Search Engine indexes information found on global and public Usenet servers via an automated process without any human intervention. Binsearch, NZBindex, and Newzleech were content agnostic indexers that operated like simple search engines.

Advantages: Fast and efficient search on all groups – Creation of an NZB

Disadvantages: Only looks for key words. File names can differ from the actual content of the file.

In 2005, Newsbin (nzb) and BinNews (bns) files revolutionized Usenet. Indexing became much easier. The first search engines were able to index different groups and show search results via NZB (which gives the newsreaders all necessary information to recover the file: name and date of post, number of articles, post group).

There are an enormous amount of NZB search engines: Binsearch and NZBIndex are the most efficient. Try them all! Sometimes results appear differently with different search engines.

Newznab-based indexer

Newznab is a indexing script for newsgroups. Newznab exists in a free and paying version ($20 license) with several extra functions.

How to for those that want to install it on their servers ((PEAR, Apache and MySQL are necessary):

Personally I advise trying to install it on a VPS (Linux Ubuntu) or a NAS Synology. But it is also possible on a dedicated, mutual server.

For any help or to learn more there is an anglophone forum dedicated exclusively to Newznab: NewznabForums

Newznab has a special index: from categories. In the package the categories Films, Linux, Images are preinstalled. After that you can add more groups (and desired retention) into each category. For example in the Linux category you can put the Linux groups that interest you: alt.binaires.linux // alt.binaries.linux.iso // alt.binaries.cd.image.linux

Newznab is very popular at the moment. It is perfectly integrated (via API - More detailed information about the basic newznab api is avaible here: newznab api.) into CouchPota.to, Sonarr,  SickBeard and Headphones. Many people install it to index newsgroups of their choice and to automatically update (PVR Personal Video Recorder) the downloads once the post is finished. So popular that a USP like Astraweb deducts 20% of Headers used on their Block account! This is why we recommend using Newznab with a USP like Usenet-News which don't deduct Headers from your Block: "Headers are not counted against your block quota. "

Avantages: free Script You can install Newznab yourself (VPS websites Syno) or use sites that have it installed for your usage. Can be used in conjunction with PVR SickBeard, CouchPota and Headphones

Inconvénients: needs some knowhow. Lots of groups (and retention) needs extensive system resources if you install it yourself. Community under development.

There are an enormous amount of Newznab sites:Usenet-Crawler and DogNZB are the most efficient.

nZEDb-based indexer

nZEDb (official nZEDb guide) is a fork of newznab plus. It provides a web-based front-end providing search, browse, and programmable (API) functionality. nZEDb improves upon the original design, implementing several new features including: Advanced search features (name, subject, category, post-date etc) + Image and video samples + CouchPotato / SABnzbd / NZBGet integration

NZBFinder, NZB.CAT and DrukenSlug are the most efficient.

NZB indexing service

For easy access to newsgroup content, there are indexes for newsgroups. Among the thousands of groups where files are posted with names that do not necessarily match the nature of the file, you need to use websites that reference the content. These sites and reference forums let you search Usenet's content. These communities classify and index everything by category (theme) and create links between the posted name and exact content of the file. It is a manual index. It allows users to quickly and easily find anything posted on Usenet. They are like newsgroup directories.

Advantages: everything is classified, rapid search, rare content

Disadvantages: content relies on the community that indexes and classifies.

NZBGrabit and The-Hive are the most efficient.

Spotweb-based website

Spotweb is a webbased usenet binary resource indexer based on the protocol and development done by Spotnet. The successor of FTD.
