Usenet Network

Usenet is a decentralized network, it works by each Usenet server sharing its information with all the other servers on the network. This propagation across servers makes Usenet an ideal place for storing information and data of all types. If a server is damaged (Message-IDs missing), the article can still exists on every other server in the network.

Usenet Secure

Secure and anonymous Usenet and Newsgroups?

More and more frequently people ask us about the security level of exchanges within newsgroups. And about Usenet anonymity: is it guaranteed? In fact for several years now, this desire for anonymity, for confidentiality and security has increased to match the growing legislation and impression of control over the internet (see the proposed laws ACTA -SOPA - PIPA, DPI, QOS....)

Therefore anonymity and secure exchanges are clearly important factors in deciding on a network. Usenet is by nature well protected and has been for a long time, Newsgroups are generally seen as secure since the only people who know what you're downloading are you. This implies a decentralised network and so a total absence of central an primary servers, the status of providers to usenet access (common carrier service provider) and the existence of SSL.

What is the security level of exchanges and transfers on the Usenet network?

Until 2006 transfers between your computer and the server you connected to were not totally secure. Since then and thanks to Giganews who first proposed the option, all Usenet servers offer SSL. Secure Sockets Layers or SSL is a secure transaction procedure that increases your security of access to Usenet. (Usenet providers use the same security protocols as online banking). SSL is like a tunnel, a secure channel of communication (encoded by a 256 bit key) between two machines (a client and a server). SSL allows secure and anonymous downloading on newsgroups. It has three main advantages:

1 - SSL encrypting stops any interception of data downloaded or sent

2 - SSL allows you to bypass any filter your ISP might have for Usenet

3 - SSL fights any network surveillance. For example: from July 2012, the biggest American ISPs (Comcast, Cablevision, Verizon, Time Warner Cable and other bandwidth providers) will begin surveillance of the activity and traffic of ordinary Americans. The Usenet network is of course included, being a great space for freedom and exchange as well as a bandwidth consumer. Newsgroup traffic will also be monitored. To counter this monitoring of your Usenet activities and for the respect of your private life, we would strongly recommend to connect using SSL.

Will a VPN make you more secure?

There is no need to use a VPN to improve your connection safety. SSL connection to your usenet server should be enough IMO. If Usenet is encrypted then there's no reason to use the VPN encryption as well. You need a VPN for downloading if you are hiding your IP of origin because a VPN gives you a new IP from its global servers or if you plan to upload to Usenet and want to stay as anonymous as possible: Usenet anonymity.

The second disadvantage is a loss of speed. The great thing about Usenet compared to torrenting is high, constant speed.

Without a VPN, I've been downloading hundreds of gigs a month from usenet binaries for the last 20 years without a single problem from my ISPs but I recommend choosing a USP that offers VPN access for free. Even if it doesn't increase your security when accessing Usenet, the VPN protects your privacy for other activities on the internet. VPN also helps to overcome censorship blocks and geocode restrictions, because you choose your IP's location. Finally with a VPN you can download torrents in total safety (every peer that you connect to when downloading a file sees your IP address) thanks to the VPN IP.

Which newsgroup providers offer SSL?

All providers now offer SSL. We would recommend NewsHosting. For $9.99/month or $99/year (with 30 connections and days retention) you can benefit from encrypted newsgroup access with free Newsreader at an unbeatable price.

How do you connect to newsgroups with SSL?

There are 3 steps to take:

-  TIck the SSL box in your Newsreader. If you have the Newsreader from NewsHosting you just need to tick the SSL box.

- Use the SSL address from your Usenet provider

=> For Newshosting use: news.newshosting.com

- Choose port 563 (or 443) to connect with SSL

Which Usenet Services Take Your Security Seriously?

SSL level encryption - The SSL encryption allows users to get on the system without worrying about being monitored, which is something those at all concerned about their privacy will appreciate.

News server address for SSL access. What are the server addresses? - Each USP has a specific address for its SSL connections.

We have even the alternative addresses for you.

NNTP Usenet Encrypted Ports - A USP with more than one Usenet SSL Ports is important since the use of each port means something.

The default SSL port for NNTP is 563. Some work better than others depending on your configuration or your ISP. For example, the benefits of using port 443 instead of port 563 is that the latter could be closed if you are behind a firewall, while port 443 is often open for HTTPS traffic.

Extra layers of security - How To Make Usenet Even More Secure ?

VPN (another layer of privacy and security) - A VPN is an encryption tool that puts users in control of their IP address while providing Internet privacy because all online traffic is passed through an encrypted tunnel.

Newshosting helps ensure your privacy with free 256-bit SSL encryption

With 256 BIT SSL Encryption, you can trust your activity is completely safe.

Newshosting has servers in the USA and Europe they have multiple redundant backbone connections to the Internet so speed is only limited by your own ISP if you live in the USA or Europe.

news.newshosting.com

Alternate server addresses

Netherlands server: news.ams.newshosting.com or news.eu.newshosting.com

  • All payments are processed by certified and well respected payment providers.

VPN connection to all plan users (Newshosting is currently including free VPN access with annual sign ups), to ensure that you are protected and your privacy and anonymity are secured.

Newshosting doesn’t record, monitor or store logs of your VPN activity. They allow P2P traffic on the network.

Newshosting is the best USP for Usenet access + VPN. The annual rate is $99 and will get you the best Usenet access (best retention, 3 server farms throughout the US and Europe), the best Newsreader and a VPN!

Why do I believe Newshosting to be the best in its category?

With NewsHosting I can download my NZB files from an indexer, I can search within groups since Headers are references by the Newsreader, I can use the integrated search engine, I can make my series downloads automatic thanks to the automatic search function

So what is the VPN for?

It means if I need to, I can download the Torrents and download with a direct download link in total safety.

One package for all your activities! My secondary Usenet servers (on different backbones) are mostly for testing because with a Usenet+VPN package there is no need for backup servers.

Conclusion:

Security is very important for many users of newsgroup services. Many Usenet service providers provide an extra layer of privacy by offering 256-bit SSL Encryption to their nntp news servers. SSL helps usenet users bypass throttling attempts by ISP's who try limit the speed of Usenet traffic on their network. SSL also provides a secure way to connect to the news server- encrypting the nntp traffic that the user downloads.

TIP: Using VPN does not increase sercurity. You can read numerous articles about the necessity of VPN for Usenet use, but it does not help when it comes to security. SSL already serves to secure the channel.
