Usenet Network

Usenet is a decentralized network, it works by each Usenet server sharing its information with all the other servers on the network. This propagation across servers makes Usenet an ideal place for storing information and data of all types. If a server is damaged (Message-IDs missing), the article can still exists on every other server in the network.

UsenetLink Review

The principle is pretty simple. UsenetLink is a reseller for many different Tier-1 Providers (backbones). Their Feed does not depend on one Tier-1 (a classic system for the last 15 years) but on several. Usenetlink has commercial NNTP feeds from all major Usenet backbones (Usenet Service Providers and maybe ISPs)

Their goal: promote Usenet with high completion! When you download a file it is cut up into different articles (Message-IDs). Sometimes the entire article is not present on your usual Usenet Service provider (Tier-1 or Usenet Reseller) so UsenetLink will search in the background for the file wherever it still exists on the Usenet network.

Usenet is a decentralised network where each Tier-1 provider communicates with the others to diffuse files almost instantly via a regular Feed. So if a file (made up of a dozen articles) is posted via the Tier-1 Newshosting then it will be immediately spread to all the other Tier 1 providers. Usenetlink’s offer is based on this technical principle.

You can also construct your own “high completion” package by subscribing to different Tier-1 providers and resellers (Unlimited and/or Block accounts). The absolute key is to know about backbone providers when choosing one provider to use in combination with others

Best combination of Usenet providers: Newshosting unlimited + Eweka Unlimited + UsenetExpress Block

The best Usenet provider is actually… using 3 Usenet providers at once!  I utilise 2 recurring services and 1 block account. This might sound excessive, but is actually the acknowledged way to get the best reliability and completion rates.  My 3 Usenet providers enable me to get the best value for money on the most backbones: Newshosting (3 servers: NL - US - DE) + Tweaknews (NL Server) + Eweka (NL Server) + UsenetExpress (US Server) + XSNews (NL Server) + Other Tier-1 Provider

  1. Newshosting: Running on its own backbone backbone and offering days of retention.  It is currently available for $99/year. Newshosting has three servers so each one has different Message-IDs. This can seem unbelievable but when a takedown request happens the parts that are removed are never the same ones on each server even from the same provider. Each servers has different Message-IDs left on it. Adding them together you can easily get to 60-70%.
  2. Eweka: Eweka is a Usenet provider based in The Netherlands. Eweka is under the NTD-behavioural code and not the DMCA, so it is very rare something would be removed on both Eweka and Newshosting. There are two main subscription plans you can choose between. You get access speeds of up to 50Mbps with the Pre-Paid Standard Account 50 Mbps (Pre-Paid Standard Account 50 Mbps can be shared with many users), and 300Mbps if you sign up through our special page (No sharing account)
  3. UsenetExpress: You can purchase a 500 GB block for $20. This is an interesting addition because UsenetExpress is a Hybrid provider, UsenetExpress owns its small cluster that can contain approx 30 days of data in US. UsenetExpress uses also backup providers XSNews (NL backend company) and other Tier-1 provider after their own retention to 1000+ days of retention. UsenetExpress gets you access to 3 different backend providers (UsenetExpress + Tier-1 provider+ XSNews) with one single account

So how much is all this costing me?

This combination of Usenet providers gets you access to 8 differents servers (Each servers has different Files and Message-IDs) on 5 differents bakbones !

$99 + 99 € /12 = equivelant to $16.50/mo + a one off $20 fee for the block account

If you want an even cheaper setup you could share Usenet account:

Eweka allows shared accounts (Account sharing allowed) but only on their Standard account (Speeds up to 50 Mbit/s - 8 connections per account). So for 4 users the unlimited plan at 50 Mbps comes to less than €2 / month

UsenetExpress authorises account sharing on Bock account

UsenetLink Alternatives

Other Hybrid Usenet providers which are good alternatives to UsenetLink are:

  • Usenet.Farm: With Usenet.Farm you access to 3 different backend providers (Usenet.Farm uses XSnews and other T1 after their own retention) with only having 1 account. Usenet.Farm provides unlimited Usenet for 7,95 € a month (To The Max). You can also purchase a 500 GB block for $20. You can share your account for the To The Max (You and a buddy of you) and Block (Unlimited friends) products

  • UsenetExpress: With UsenetExpress you access to 3 different backend providers (UsenetExpress uses XSnews and other T1 after their own retention) with only having 1 account. UsenetExpress provides unlimited Usenet and VPN access for $10 a month. You can also purchase a 500 GB block for $20. You can add VPN access to a block for $2.50 a month.
