Usenet Server Terms and Information - Newsgroup Server Glossary

Usenet - Newsgroup

Usenet is a world-wide distributed discussion system. USENET was created in 1979. It consists of a set of "newsgroups" with names that are classified hierarchically by subject. Binary groups are intended for postings with file attachments. The attachments are usually: pictures, movie clips, sound files, or software programs. Usenet is gaining in popularity and increasing its enormous technological potential: it boasts servers all over the world, a decentralized structure that has been stable and efficient since 1979, a secure network assured by SSL.

The name “Usenet” is used for the network as a whole

The term “Newsgroup” is used for an individual group. Usenet can host up to 110 000 Newsgroups. Groups dedicated to distributed binaries, generally under the “alt.binaries” newsgroup hierarchy

All Internet service providers (I.S.P) also offer free access to Usenet (e.g. But with recent network growth and increased filtering by ISPs, the Usenet access that they provide is often limited to text. If binary groups are allowed it is often with only a very poor retention rate, with quota or with certain groups censured.

In order to really benefit from Newsgroups, it is advisable to take out a paying subscription to Usenet access. (Forget about free servers like Just4today or others with unstable access). These Usenet service providers have the technical capacity and professionalism to guarantee quality Usenet access

20,000 are considered active. “Newsgroups,” the preferred nomenclature for a Usenet group, always was a misnomer. in most newsgroups, moderation simply didn’t exist.

What is Usenet?

Usenet is a network protocol that dates back to 1979. It is a decentralized network, that respects neutrality, anonymity, privacy and security. We can access Usenet through a Usenet Service Provider. The best News Service Provider is Newshosting

Usenet offers High Speed Downloads, reliability and safety, even compared to popular file-sharing protocol such as Torrents. (Usenet vs Torrents)

Comparing and Choosing a Usenet Provider : What are the different Usenet subscriptions? How much do they cost? And what other factors should be taken into account in order to choose?

All of the Usenet providers that we have compared and graded 3/5 4/5 or 5/5 are worthy services that meet our evaluation criteria for choosing a good Usenet service

Overall Newshosting - the server we recommend - receives the highest marks in each category.

Users who are evaluating Usenet providers need to consider several factors beyond the monthly charges that they have to pay for the access. The most important factors are:

Price Price is very important. All servers offer prices that are pretty close to $10 monthly

NewsHosting offers the best price relative to quality (Usenet + Newsreader Bundles) - Unlimited: $9.99 a month or $99 a year

If you are only interested in Just-Usenet access then UsenetServer is for you. For $10 monthly UsenetServer is offering fast and secure Usenet access with high retention.

Unlimited Annual Offers - With a yearly subscription you can save 20% off the monthly rate! => Both UsenetServer (at $95.40 per year) and Newshosting (at $99 per year) have been in the Usenet market for over ten years, so they can guarantee a good and safe service for the duration.

Newsgroup Back End Providers Tier 1 provider => Tier 1 provider meaning that they run their own servers, meaning that own and manage their own server farms directly.  This gives to subscribers direct access into the backbone, ensuring industry-best speed, security and reliability. Compared to resellers of newsgroups, this autonomy is clearly an advantage.

Traffic Limits How many Gigabytes can you download per month?  This forms the main difference between Unlimited and Block accounts. For frequent use without worrying about total gigabytes, the unlimited account is obviously best. Otherwise Pay as you go is also an option (Newsdemon or Usenet-News) to only pay for the gigabytes you use.

Connection Limits How many simultaneous connections are allowed? Once you start using Usenet seriously, speed becomes an important issue, especially if you download a lot of files. Most commercial Usenet service providers allow multiple simultaneous connections, which can make far much faster downloading. Eg: NewsHosting is now offering 60 connections with their NHXL account. We do not recommend using more connections than what is needed to fill your max bandwidth. Using too many connections may even decrease performance for many users! 50 or 60 connections helps only those who have ultra fast connections as 100Mbps. Unless you have ultra fast connections as 100Mbps we don't recommend using more than 8-10 connections.

Encryption Do Usenet providers offer encryption? All Newsgroup providers offer SSL for free. What is SSL? SSL Encryption is another layer of NNTP traffic security protection that Usenet providers offer. All data passed from the Usenet provider's servers to the customer's computer is encrypted. Although not a lot of private information is typically transferred via newsgroups, SSL encryption ensures Usenet users that what they are reading and posting is unable to be intercepted by others. Usernames and passwords are also protected, as is all traffic that is sent to and from the news server. SSL offers complete privacy protection while downloading or uploading files from Usenet servers.

=> How safe is Usenet wit SSL?

Data Retention For how long are the Usenet articles stored on the servers? Retention refers to the length of time that a post is available to subscribers. Binary Retention means the time the Usenet server keeps articles around before they expire. On each Usenet server the administrator will determine the retention for each Usenet newsgroup usually by allotting it a certain amount of hard drive space.

1- There are two kinds of retention. On the site, the official retention corresponds to the file “headers” (which appear when you update your groups). But servers also keep files on other servers which provides a greater real retention. By exclusively using NZB files, you will have access to this real retention or message ID. These days servers tend to refer to the more important “real” retention. Full Header retention is a major feature, a very important factor. Header retention means the file name as it appears on the servers. Users will be able to search all the available binary articles without the need for NZBs or an NZB search index. It is important to subscribe to servers that have a Full Header retention (Header + NZB) Some U.S.P provide less Header retention than NZB retention. The reason for not fully support the use of headers comes with the fact that headers eats up a lot of bandwidth thats totally unnecessarily.
2- All groups do not have the same retention. The biggest groups have weaker retention because a greater number of fiels posted meansmeans lower storage capacity for the servers.

Usenet Bundles Extra Usenet features Usenet providers are beginning to add to their premium accounts some additional features like SSL, VPN or Online Storage. More and more Usenet providers are adding extra options to create extra value with the unlimited account

Usenet Packages Everything you need in one place => Usenet access and an advanced newsreader with Search, Preview, Automatic Repair, Decompression

Why? There are many companies that sell access to Usenet. Each tries to stand out from the other companies. Every company wants to win over the customer. So some Usenet providers offers Usenet Bundles (Unlimited Usenet + Extras Usenet features like VPN or Online Storage) or Usenet Packages to improve your Usenet experience
On this page we have made a comprehensive list of the different options included with various unlimited accounts. Newsdemon remains the best Usenet bundles with VPN + MIMO + Online Storage. As for NewsHosting, they are actually offering Best Usenet package with unlimited Usenet + Newsreader

Online Storage Online Storage is a browser-based application that allows you to store and access your important files, safely and securely — online. Much like a folder on your hard drive, Online Storage allows you to back up your files and stores them in a safe place for you. You'll have access to your files 24/7, you can share your files with others, and you can even encrypt your files for an extra level of protection.

Unlimited Usenet-Only - At the other end of the spectrum other providers continue to offer a simple unlimited Usenet access. => Just Usenet offer: A few Usenet providers offer just unlimited Usenet access with SSL encryption. No features, no packages, just Usenet Acces. Eg: Extremeusenet

Speed Limits What’s the average and maximum speed that users get?  The favourite Usenet providers of NGProvider will fill your bandwidth.
All of the Usenet servers recommended by NGProvider are capable of filling your bandwidth without any problems. Premium Newsgroup servers are technically advanced and share files with all the big BackBones. Slow speeds can happen due to your Internet Service Provider (no completion, Q.O.S, overstretched servers) or Network issues. How to get Better Usenet Speeds? To combat these slower speeds you can:

  • Change connection ports: Use 443 instead of 563 for SSL. Or change the default 119 port for another
  • Change connection address: As long as your Newsgroup provider offers two addresses, one in Europre and one in the USA
  • Increase the number of connections: Contrary to popular opinion, this is not always efficient since the Usenet server will take longer to reply. Without SSL, 8 connections are enough. With SSL, it is best to use 10-12 connections.
  • If you have very fast broadband (Fibre optic or cable) and want to maximise it we would recommend a multi-server Newsreader like Sabnzbd. Subscribe to a Usenet server that either offers lots of connections, like Newshosting (60 secure simultaneous connections with two ports) or to servers that offer multiple addresses like Astraweb (one in the States and one in Europe).

Completion Are the files that are uploaded complete?  That is, when you download from newsgroups you're assured that the articles posted are actually there. This can sometimes be an issue with other services. Especially as posts age.

Fill/BackUp Usenet Server Sometimes it happens that your main Usenet provider is missing some parts of your download, then you need to purchase a block-account. Get it from a different provider to that of your main servers (bear in mind that many companies are resellers and have the same backend). I recommend Usenet-news (Readnews backend) for purchasing a fill block (slave server).

Censorship Are the newsgroups uncensored? Free Usenet access is often censored. Paying Usenet providers do no filter or censor.

Payment type

What forms of payment are accepted? There are several payment methods you can choose from:

- Credit card:

- Paypal: Newsdemon,NewsHosting, UsenetServer, Easynews
